Low Lies the Fields of Athenry

In March 2024, I had the pleasure of visiting Athenry Castle, nestled in the heart of County Galway, Ireland. As I approached the imposing structure, I was immediately captivated by its medieval charm and the whispers of history that seemed to linger in the air.

Walking through the castle’s gatehouse, I felt as though I had stepped back in time. The sturdy stone walls and the remnants of ancient battlements spoke of a bygone era when the castle served as a fortress and a symbol of power. The castle was built in the 13th century by Meiler de Bermingham, one of the Norman lords who played a significant role in the Anglo-Norman conquest of Ireland.

Athenry Castle is managed by OPW and is free to enter if you have the heritage card. As with all heritage Ireland site, do check if they are open as some sites are closed for the winter months.

The Keep and its Views

One of the first things that caught my eye was the impressive three-story keep, which stands as a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the time. As I explored the keep’s interior, I marveled at the intricate stonework and the narrow winding staircase that led to the upper levels. From the top, I was rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside, which was once dotted with small villages and farmland.

Athenry Castle’s Great Hall, the heart of the castle, offered a glimpse into the lives of its former inhabitants. The hall, adorned with tapestries and wooden beams, was a space where feasts and gatherings would have taken place. It was easy to imagine the lively banquets that once filled the room, accompanied by music and laughter.

Athenry and its Medieval Walls

One of the most fascinating aspects of Athenry Castle is its connection to the town of Athenry itself. The town, with its well-preserved medieval walls, is a reminder of the castle’s strategic importance during the medieval period. The walls, which were built to protect the town from invaders, still stand as a testament to the resilience and determination of its people.

As I wandered through the castle grounds, I couldn’t help but be struck by the sense of history that permeates every corner. Athenry Castle is not just a collection of stones and mortar; it is a living monument to the past, a place where the stories of knights, nobles, and common folk come to life.

The People Behind the Castle

The history of Athenry Castle is intertwined with the lives of several notable figures. Meiler de Bermingham, the castle’s builder, was a key figure in the Anglo-Norman conquest of Ireland. His efforts in constructing the castle and the surrounding town of Athenry laid the foundation for its future significance.

In 1316, the castle faced a significant challenge when it was attacked by a large Irish army led by Felim O’Conor and Taigh O’Kelly. Despite the formidable opposition, the castle’s defenders managed to repel the attack, resulting in a pivotal moment in Athenry’s history.

During the 15th century, the Berminghams moved from the castle to their town house near the market cross in the square. This shift marked a change in the castle’s role and its connection to the town’s daily life.

In 1596, during the Nine Years’ War, the castle fell into the hands of the O’Donnells, another significant chapter in its storied history. The castle’s battlements, dating back to the 13th century, were incorporated into gables for a new roof in the 15th century, showcasing the architectural evolution over time.

For any visitor to Athenry Castle, the experience is nothing short of magical. The castle’s rich history, combined with its stunning architecture and picturesque surroundings, makes it a must-see destination for anyone with an interest in Ireland’s medieval heritage. My visit to Athenry Castle was a journey through time, and I left with a deep appreciation for the stories and traditions that have shaped this remarkable place.
