Rome Food
Think of Italy and the book Eat, Pray Love came to mind. The author of the book came to Italy to eat and replenish her energy after a rough divorce. So we are here enjoying the food Rome has to offer.
Amatriciana
Heard about Amatriciana pastas just before we left for Rome. Apparently this is a pasta dish that is common in Rome. Pasta sauce is made with Guanciale, crushed tomatoes and Romano cheese. We tried Amatriciana pasta in a few places and somehow they taste different each time. There’s also amatriciana pizza, I tried cooking amatriciana pasta at home when we came back, works out well especially if it has time to soak the sauce overnight in the fridge. We had ours from Osteria Angelino dal 1899.
Pinsa
There was this late night hole in the wall called Pinsallegra, serving Pinsa near the hotel. We didn’t know what it was, cause it looked like Pizza. They are small pies, thin crust. There’s a lot of topping to choose from and we went crazy with topping not usually found in traditional pizza. Toppings such as potato and truffles. There’s not much sauce on the pinsa, so the taste of the toppings come off very strong. This is a unique dish, taste good but definitely not pizza.
Carbonara
Made with eggs, Guanciale and romano cheese, this pasta is commonly found all over the world. I make this off and on at home, as there’s not much cooking needed to make the sauce.
KFC delivered with Glovo
Started with an obsession in my early days doing business trips, to have KFC everywhere I go in the world. Saw some KFC billboards near the hotel. Google map shows that the nearest KFC is too far to walk in the summer heat.
Signed up for Glovo and have them delivered KFC to the hotel, where we get to use the common dining room.
Can safely say that KFC in Italy is better than the ones in Ireland. Definitely cannot beat the hot and spicy in Malaysia. The hot chicken tenders in Rome KFC is pretty close to the Hot and Spicy chicken. The spiciness and cripyness is toned down a few notches but there is enough flavour to be close. The original recipe chicken is less oily than Ireland’s KFC.
Overall
There is only so much restaurant and takeaway food we can eat. Not just because it cost more, but also the amount of rich food. To get light meals, we visit the nearby Pam Local. This is a small convenient shop around Rome. They have some selection of sandwiches, drinks, snacks and microwave meals. This is when staying in a hotel with shared kitchen helps, we are able to microwave some meals when we want to get something light.
